Minisforum MS-S1 Max review
Our verdict
Minisforum MS-S1 Max is the networking-and-expansion alternative in this Strix Halo shortlist. We prefer Geekom A9 Mega for a general single-user AI workstation, but MS-S1 Max is more interesting when its infrastructure features have a defined role.
How we assessed it
This researched assessment uses published specifications. It does not claim a first-hand laboratory test; the Testbench score is an editorial rating, not a measurement.
Running large local models on the MS-S1 Max
The Max+ 395 platform supports a substantial shared-memory model workspace. Decide which model and context you need before choosing capacity. Results from a different chassis or backend do not establish the speed of this particular machine under your settings.
Dual 10GbE, USB4 v2 and the PCIe slot
The published networking and expansion features distinguish MS-S1 Max from simpler desktop boxes. They are useful for moving datasets, adding supported hardware or hosting services. Check lane allocation, physical clearance and electrical support before treating the PCIe slot as a route to any desktop graphics card.
Clustering two units
Two machines do not automatically become one larger-memory accelerator. You need software that distributes the model or workloads, and the communication cost can dominate. Fast networking makes experimentation possible; it does not guarantee an improvement for every inference task.
Noise, thermals and power
Long-running server use and a short interactive session place different demands on cooling. Place the chassis where the intakes remain clear and measure the behaviour at the intended load. The infrastructure feature set is not proof that it is quieter than A9 Mega.
64GB or 128GB?
Choose memory at purchase because this platform uses onboard memory. 64GB can serve many moderate quantised workloads, while 128GB provides more room for larger models and context. Pay for capacity you can use with your backend rather than treating maximum RAM as a general performance multiplier.
Frequently asked questions
Is the MS-S1 Max worth it over the GMKtec EVO-X2?
It can be worth a premium if you need its networking and expansion. For simple single-machine inference, additional infrastructure may offer little benefit.
Can you cluster two MS-S1 Max units?
You can connect and run distributed software on multiple units. They do not automatically pool memory for an ordinary single-machine model runner.
What can you put in the MS-S1 Max PCIe slot?
Use hardware within the slot’s electrical, power and physical limits. Confirm those limits for the exact chassis before purchasing a card.
