Minisforum AI X1 Pro review
Our verdict
Minisforum AI X1 Pro is an expansion-oriented alternative to Geekom A9 Max. We prefer Geekom for a general desktop, but the AI X1 Pro is particularly relevant if a native OCuLink external GPU connection is part of your plan.
How we assessed it
This researched assessment uses published specifications. It does not claim a first-hand laboratory test; the Testbench score is an editorial rating, not a measurement.
Running local LLMs on the AI X1 Pro
Treat AI X1 Pro as an HX-tier computer until an external GPU changes the configuration. A supported iGPU backend can run smaller models; the available memory and model settings decide whether a workload fits. A newer CPU variant alone does not make the system equivalent to Strix Halo.
OCuLink and adding an external GPU
OCuLink is the main reason to shortlist this system. An external GPU adds its own VRAM, power supply and dock, changing both cost and desk space. Check driver support and the GPU’s memory before buying the connection hardware: bandwidth cannot make an undersized card hold a larger model.
Built-in power supply, noise and thermals
An internal power supply changes cable management, not the amount of heat the entire system generates. Provide ventilation and compare sustained-load behaviour in the power mode you intend to use. We do not infer a quietness result from the absence of an external brick.
Memory and storage upgrades
Check the exact Pro-370 or Pro-470 specification and the installed RAM arrangement. A price for a barebones unit excludes the components that make it usable. Count compatible memory, SSD and software in the total rather than comparing a kit price with a ready-to-use Geekom.
Pro-470 vs Pro-370
Choose Pro-470 for a small premium with matching memory and storage. Choose Pro-370 when the saving can fund a more useful upgrade. Our general preference remains A9 Max; buy this Minisforum for its specific expansion advantage rather than a generic claim of AI superiority.
